2016 ANNUAL CHARITABLE GIVING – National Park Foundation

Many years ago we started giving to a different charity each year instead of sending out Holiday cards. Holiday cards are nice but ultimately end up in the trash or at best, recycled. We have donated a percentage of our profits to several charities over the years ranging from the environment to charities helping kids. This year we have selected the National Park Foundation.

"The National Park Foundation, the official charitable partner of the National Park Service, enriches America’s national parks and programs through the support of private citizens, park lovers, stewards of nature, history enthusiasts, and wilderness adventurers. Chartered by Congress in 1967, the Foundation grew out of a legacy of park protection that began over a century ago, when ordinary citizens took action to establish and protect our national parks.

Today, the National Park Foundation carries on the tradition of early park advocates, big thinkers, doers and dreamers—from John Muir and Ansel Adams to President Theodore Roosevelt."

2015 ANNUAL CHARITABLE GIVING – The Mission Continues

Several years ago we started giving to a different charity each year instead of sending out Holiday cards. Holiday cards are nice but ultimately end up in the trash or at best, recycled. We have donated a percentage of our profits to charities ranging from the environment to charities helping kids. This year we have selected The Mission Continues.

"The Mission Continues empowers veterans facing the challenge of adjusting to life at home to find new missions. We redeploy veterans in their communities, so that their shared legacy will be one of action and service.

Through the Mission Continues, veterans serve their country in new ways by engaging in our innovative and action-oriented programs. The first, The Mission Continues’ Fellowship, harnesses veterans’ strengths, skills, and their compassion and empowers them to volunteer with non-profit organizations in their community on a daily basis. The second, The Mission Continues’ Service Platoons, brings teams of veterans who are working together with partners at the local level to build stronger communities and tackle pressing issues."

2014 ANNUAL CHARITABLE GIVING – Carnegie Institution for Science

Several years ago we started giving to a different charity each year instead of sending out Holiday cards. Holiday cards are nice but ultimately end up in the trash or at best, recycled. We have donated a percentage of our profits to charities ranging from the environment to charities helping kids. This year we have selected Carnegie Institution for Science. Our donation, even though not as significant as that of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will go towards the program with the greatest need within the institution.

"Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Institution for Science (formerly known as Carnegie Institution of Washington) in 1902 as an organization for scientific discovery. The Carnegie Institution works to devote resources to exceptional individuals so that they can explore the most intriguing scientific questions in an atmosphere of complete freedom. Carnegie investigators are leaders in the fields of plant biology, developmental biology, Earth and planetary sciences, astronomy, and global ecology."

2013 ANNUAL CHARITABLE GIVING – Maker Education Initiative

Several years ago we started giving to a different charity each year instead of sending out Holiday cards. Holiday cards are nice but ultimately end up in the trash or hopefully recycled. We have donated a percentage of our profits to charities ranging from the environment to charities helping kids. This year we have selected Maker Education Initiative. The Maker Education Initiative is a project of the Tides Center, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit public charity with 4 stars on Charity Navigator.

"Maker Ed’s mission is to create more opportunities for young people to develop confidence, creativity, and spark an interest in science, technology, engineering, math, the arts, and learning as a whole through making."

There is a Maker Movement in the US which has the power to really help bring manufacturing back. With community workshops available in every major city and 3D printers available at a reasonable price almost anyone can turn their dreams and ideas into a reality.

2012 ANNUAL CHARITABLE GIVING – A Kid Again

A couple years ago we started giving to charity instead of sending out Holiday cards that will just end up in the trash. This year I have selected A Kid Again as the recipient of our annual charitable giving. A Kid Again is a Charity Navigator 4-star charity working in Ohio. The organization only spends a small percentage on CEO pay and marketing compared to larger groups. The majority of donations go directly to their programs.

Here is a little more about A Kid Again:

Founded in 1995 as Adventures For Wish Kids, A Kid Again enriches the lives of children with life threatening illnesses and their families by providing healing times of respite through our fun-filled group activities and destination events, which we call adventures. Our year round adventures foster laughter, joy, normalcy and supportive networking opportunities. We strive to offer our children, siblings and parents a cost free occasion to enjoy quality time together and to create lasting memories. A Kid Again focuses on three major programs: adventure events, parent's night out and hospital visitations.

2010 ANNUAL DONATION TO CHARITY

We have decided to donate a percentage of our profits to charity this year. With the financial problems caused by the poor economy, charities have been receiving less donations than in years past. In an effort to help ailing charities, and in sticking with our GREEN initiatives, we have decided not to send out Holiday Cards. Instead, we will be donating that money, and more, to a charity that we pick each year. We will be using http://www.charitynavigator.org/ to select a charity that has low fundraising and administrative expenses and has four stars.

This year we have decided to donate to Oceana. Oceana, founded in 2001, is the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation. Their offices in North America, Central America, South America and Europe work together on a limited number of strategic, directed campaigns to achieve measurable outcomes that will help return our oceans to former levels of abundance.
